Defence & Security

Serving the markets of the future

The EADS Defence & Security Division (DS) is the defence and security pillar within EADS, driving the Group’s development of integrated system solutions that meet its customers’ needs for Network Enhanced Capabilities (NEC).

We build on a strong tradition of airborne weapons and missile systems and incorporate state-of-the-art Network Enhanced Capabilities: systems intelligence, integration and expertise. By recognising the need to be mission-critical and security oriented, we are preparing our customers to meet their new global challenges – whether land-, navy- or air-based. Our business means securing the future.

Networking the Capabilities

The Response to the Transformation Challenge

Linking all relevant resources, EADS Defence & Security provides network solutions combining military aircraft, missile systems, defence and communications systems, defence electronics, and related services. This guarantees interoperability across individual branches of the armed forces and in multinational deployment scenarios. As a true net-centric enterprise, we combine know-how and experience at the product, system and system-of-systems levels, so as to optimise the decision-making chain from sensor-to-shooter. Protection demands instant availability of the right information in the right place at the right time.

Product Level

Smart products form the basis of every efficient system – be it for joint forces at sea, air or ground level, or civil security forces. Utilising a wide-range of EADS technologies, DS designs, models, implements and manages these state-of-the art products. We supply electronics and sensors for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles, advanced avionics for our helicopters and high-tech products for secure communications. Every advanced system that we provide is built on a set of smart products.

System Level

We implement and manage secure solutions that integrate new and traditional products. The resulting systems are designed to be easily supportable and upgradeable, facilitating incremental and spiral development.

For example, the Eurofighter Typhoon is the world’s most advanced combat air system, which combines advanced multi-mode radar and an extensive range of sensors and electronic counter measures. Integrated into a ground-based air defence system, this air system is a decisive element that enables flexible operations in order to respond to the multiple threats of today and tomorrow.

System-of-systems

To help our defence and security customers understand the complexity of their missions, we have created the System Design Centre, the heart of our business. As a synthetic networked experimentation environment, NetCOS - Network Centric Operations Simulations Centre - provides the systems design framework and core competencies for system-of-systems concept development. As part of the world’s largest federated net-centric simulation environment, accidents, civil incidents, military missions and natural disasters can now be simulated, tested and optimally prepared.

Military Air Systems

Military Air Systems combines all EADS capabilities in the areas of high-performance combat aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), manned mission and training aircraft and the ground support equipment for these systems. The focal point of Military Air Systems activities is the Eurofighter (EADS holds a 46 % share in Eurofighter GmbH). Known as Typhoon for export, this high-performance multi-role combat aircraft is designed primarily for air superiority missions with extended air-to-ground mission capability. Series production of 620 aircraft – for Germany, Italy, Spain and the UK – is in full swing with an additional 18 already on order from Austria. Military Air Systems holds design responsibility for the centre fuselage section, the flight control system and the right wing. In addition, the company is in charge of the final assembly of 180 German and 87 Spanish Eurofighters. Military Air Systems is also developing major new programmes within the field of Unmanned Combat Aerial Vehicles. Based on its expertise in complex system integration, the Business Unit is playing an active role in various airborne military mission systems as well as in the joint European Technology Acquisition Programme (ETAP). In addition, this Business Unit offers integrated training systems, with Mako HEAT (High Energy Advanced Trainer) at the forefront of its training activities. Military Air Systems is a partner to various NATO air forces in technical and logistic support or modernisation of the most diverse types of aircraft, including the F-18 Hornet, Tornado, F-4 Phantom, Mirage F-1, C-130 Hercules, Transall C-160, P-3 Orion or E-3A AWACS. Components for Airbus are manufactured by this Business Unit, too.

Defence and Communications Systems

Being the EADS "Systems House", Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) offers its customers comprehensive and tailored solutions, combining the know-how to design, develop and implement Large System Integration (LSI) to link the widest possible range of individual platforms and subsystems into a single effective network. System integration is also increasingly important for non-military customers in areas such as homeland security. Information and secured communication system solutions in these fields as well as systems enabling for effective border control and coastal surveillance constitute another major focus for DCS.

The DCS vocation is to create complete systems solutions of communication and information including platforms and means to implement them. With its competencies in system solutions, DCS fulfils all requirements of the customers in the area of air and naval defence, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance, as well as advanced command, control and communication (C3I) systems, professional mobile radio and Global Security.

Defence Electronics

As the “Sensors, Avionics and Electronic Warfare House” of EADS, Defence Electronics (DE) provides mission-critical elements for data gathering, data processing and distribution, and electronic self-protection. Its dominant business is based on sensors and subsystems as a second-tier supplier and addresses the market for surveillance and reconnaissance, military mission management, platform self-protection, network-enabled capabilities and forces support.

DE's portfolio comprises avionics equipment such as military mission systems, digital map generators, data link systems, radars, and missile warning and jamming systems. Multi-sensor integration software counts among this Business Unit’s core competencies. Applications in the fields of multi-sensor fusion, sensor networks, and tactical and broad-band data links all represent core elements of Network Enhanced Capabilities. These capabilities act as a force multiplier by efficiently using high-end technologies. DE’s main activities include the A400M military mission avionics and defensive aids subsystem, the electronic warfare suite for the Tiger helicopter and the radar and electronic self-protection system for Eurofighter.
